Is your child receiving an appropriate education? To answer that question, consider the following:

If your child has never been evaluated for special education services and you have some concerns that he or she may be in need, ask yourself the following questions:

• Has my child had to repeat a grade?
• Is my child performing well below grade level?
• Is my child performing well below the level of other students in his or her class?
• Does my child have difficulty verbalizing his or her thoughts?
• Does he or she have difficulty understanding what others are saying?
• Does my child have difficulty paying attention?
• Does my child need a significant amount of extra time on exams?

There are many other questions to ask. If you have answered yes to many of these, you may want to have your child evaluated for special education services. You can have your child evaluated by a private evaluator or you may refer your child for evaluations by the Department of Education. The Department of Education provides evaluations free of charge.
